‘Late Night with the Devil’ Earns Impressive Global Box Office Haul

Although it faced stiff competition from a handful of horror releases during its theatrical run, the IFC Late Night with the Devil has become an unlikely blockbuster. This weekend, its fourth at the domestic box office, the horror film grossed $440,000 from about 600 theaters domestically, pushing it past $10 million. Directed by Colin Cairns i Cameron Cairnsthe film opened to rave reviews and will debut on streaming service Shudder in a matter of days.

Late Night with the Devil has generated $9.3 million domestically and an additional $860,000 from foreign markets, for a combined global haul of $10.1 million. The film delivered the best domestic debut for an IFC title, when it generated $2.8 million from just over 1,000 theaters in its opening weekend. Late Night with the Devil grossed $2.1 million in its second weekend, expanding its theatrical footprint to over 1,400 locations, and followed it up with around $1 million in its third weekend. It is currently the 27th highest-grossing IFC film at the worldwide box office, behind Frances Ha i I'm looking for Eric.

Starring the underrated David Dastmalchian As a late-night talk show host who invites a seemingly possessed girl to boost ratings, the film received positive critical reception after its debut at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March. this it has an impressive 97% approval rating on aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, which is practically unheard of for a modern horror picture. He was equally loved by the fans; the film's audience rating on RT is 82%. In their review, Collider's Chase Hutchinson described it as an “often sinister, if occasionally mild genre film”, and praised Dastmalchian's central performance as an ambitious talk show host.

During his theatrical tour, Late Night with the Devil it competed for attention against a host of horror titles like Blumhouse's imaginarythe nun exploitation film immaculateand most recently, the legacy prequel The first omen. It remains the lowest-grossing but highest-grossing film of the bunch. The film has also been praised for reigniting interest in the demonic possession subgenre of horror and for putting a new spin on dormant found footage.
