With the sun shining brighter and warmer days ahead, it's time for beach trips, picnics and outdoor fun. But wait, while we're diligent about applying sunscreen to our face and body, let's not forget our hair and scalp! Turns out they need a little TLC too, especially when it comes to fending off those UV rays.

In the wise words of a board-certified dermatologist Dr. Neda Mehr, leaving our locks and scalp unprotected is a big no-no. They're right there, soaking up all that sunlight, which can mean problems like skin cancer if we're not careful.

Dr. Mehr explained to E! that cases of skin cancer often occur in the scalp, noting: “Many times we see people with skin cancer in the hair part.” He pointed to the role of hair in providing some protection to the skin, leading to a higher incidence of cancer in this area. However, Dr. Mehr cautioned that the sun can still damage the hair itself, breaking down the hair's protective cuticle. “Hair has an outer covering called the cuticle that protects the hair,” she said, “but the sun's UVA and UVB rays can burn that cuticle and cause split, frizzy hair that breaks easily. It's similar to if you use a hair . hair dryer in a very hot environment.”
