Goalkeeper Mary Earps was voted England Women’s Player of the Year on Tuesday following her impressive performance in the 2022-23 club season and at the Women’s World Cup.

Earps won the Golden Glove for the best goalkeeper at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where England reached the final and lost 1-0 to Spain. She kept three clean sheets across six games.

The Manchester United goalkeeper had begun the calendar year by being honoured as the 2022 FIFA Best Goalkeeper in February.

“Wow, feel so humbled and grateful to be named England Women’s Player of the Year! Bit emotional actually! Thank you to everyone that voted for me and thank you to my incredible teammates” Earps said on Instagram with a photo of herself holding the trophy.

Fans voted for the 30-year-old Earps as the top performer in the 2022-23 season ahead of Lucy Bronze and Alex Greenwood in second and third respectively.

Earps has played 16 times for England over the last 12 months, with the impressive run including two appearances in the Arnold Clark Cup success back in February.

The record also covered all seven England games at the World Cup including a player of the match performance as the Lionesses overcame Nigeria on penalties in the last 16.

She has a total of 41 caps for England, who are ranked fourth in the FIFA world rankings. Earps made her debut in 2017.

Arsenal player Bukayo Saka won the England Men’s Player of the Year Award earlier this month.

Earps’ Future at Manchester United

Recently, Earps made the headlines after her club United turned down a world-record offer for a goalkeeper in the women’s game from Arsenal. Sky Sports reported that United are refusing to sell even though Earps will be out of contract next summer.

The report added that the Old Trafford club have “a challenge” to convince her to commit her longer-term future to the club. United have let go of several players ahead of the new season, including big names such as Alessia Russo, Ona Batlle and Maria Thorisdottir.

United, who finished second last season, begin the 2023-24 campaign with an away trip to Aston Villa on October 1.
