Apple is working to introduce an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered notification summary feature when it unveils iOS 18 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, according to a report. The Cupertino-based tech giant is likely to unveil several “hands-on” AI features when it hosts its annual developer-focused event on June 10. Apple will update Siri with AI features
AppleInsider reports that the tech giant plans to update Siri in a major way by adding AI capabilities. Citing people familiar with the matter, the publication claims that Apple has internally named its AI initiatives project Greymatter and is working to introduce a feature called “Greymatter Catch Up”. It's basically a notification summary feature, but the post claims it will work through Siri.
Siri could also handle complex commands better, the report claims. It is said to get a new intelligent response framework and a large language model (LLM) on the device that will understand the context of a request and adjust its responses. The report also hopes that the language will become more conversational with the inclusion of the LLM.
Another area of focus for Apple is integrating AI features into its existing apps to make the user experience smoother. For example, a previous report claimed that the Safari browser might have a web page summary feature.
This could be similar to the features offered by Google's Gemini and Microsoft's Copilot. In addition, a web eraser feature can also be introduced that can remove any element from a web page, including banner ads, images, and text.
The Photos app could also get an AI tool called “Cleanup,” which is said to offer “Photoshop-quality” editing capabilities to users. The feature can reportedly remove any unwanted background objects from the image.
An AI-based real-time audio transcription feature could also be added to the Notes app. A report detailing this feature stated that users will be able to read, edit, copy and share these transcripts later. To easily find transcripts or long notes, a text summary feature is also being added to the Notes app.
These internal AI features are reportedly powered by Apple's Ajax LLM, which the company is keeping under wraps for now.
