Apple will reportedly launch a new password app when it hosts the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 on June 10. According to the report, the tech giant could introduce its password storage and tracking platform with iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 updates. The app is said to work with iCloud Keychain, the native service that syncs passwords and account information across Apple devices. Notably, the Cupertino-based company will also announce several new artificial intelligence (AI) features for several of its apps and services.

According to a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the new app will make its debut during the keynote session at the WWDC event. Citing people with knowledge of the app's development, the report claimed that the Passwords app will be able to save and track user passwords and generate new passwords.
According to the report, it looks like the feature will be powered by iCloud Keychain. It is a service that synchronizes passwords and account credentials on Apple devices. However, the service can only be accessed through the Settings app or when a user tries to sign in to an account. The new Passwords app will likely give users a front-end for the feature and offer more control over its functionality.
The Passwords app will also include authentication functionality. With support for verification codes, it can be used to set up two-factor authentication. Additionally, the Passwords app is also said to categorize user credentials into different categories, such as Wi-Fi networks, accounts, and passcodes. There could be others as well, but no information is known at this time.
Apple could be aiming to establish its own password management platform with this move. Currently, third-party apps like 1Password, LastPass, and Proton Pass offer password management functionality. The tech giant could reportedly allow users to import their password data from third-party apps into its Passwords app to ease the transition.
However, Apple will need to offer a full-featured app to steer people away from third-party apps. For example, 1Password offers password sharing, file storage, safe and tag organization, and additional field support. The full range of features of the Passwords app is not known at this time. They will only be known when Apple officially launches the app.
