With industry and fanbase pressure to change sounds (and styles) for every album release, it's a real feat to have a signature look as a musician. That's why Avril Lavigne is a true fashion unicorn: she's stayed true to her punk-rock aesthetic since bursting onto the music scene over 20 years ago. For her Greatest Hits tour, the artist worked with longtime collaborator and designer Ashton Michael to create stage-ready pieces filled with fringe and mesh in her signature color palette of black, white and touches of neon.

To help perfect her tour aesthetic, Lavigne used Pinterest, which just launched a new Board Sharing feature to easily explore other social platforms like Instagram and TikTok, to create a board that collects her outfits more recognizable scenario. (You'll also notice plenty of studded leather bracelets, cropped hoodies, plaid miniskirts, and ripped tights.) Between tour stops, Lavigne caught up with NYLON to talk about her favorite Y2K trend, the his musical icons and the band he wants. to make a Pinterest board.

How has working on Pinterest boards made the creative process of your tour seem easier?

All of my tour looks were created by Ashton Michael, who is an amazing designer and a great friend. When I talked to him about doing the Greatest Hits Tour, he was going and absolutely nailed it. What I use my Pinterest boards for is style and how to complete the look. It's so helpful to be able to type an idea into the search bar, pin it to a board, and then start to see it all come together.

What's one accessory you'll never go on stage without?

My Swarovski crystalized synth mic and mic stand.

What aspects of your previous tours are most memorable?

I feel like my whole style on stage on my first tour was really memorable. He wore these baggy low rise jeans, big belt buckles, a t-shirt and of course the tie!

As your fans grow with you, are there any fashion trends from the 2000s that you still love today?

I love these colorful jelly bracelets and key bracelets. I take them on stage almost every night.

You've inspired a whole generation of female performers. Who inspired you when you started?

Growing up in Canada, I was really inspired by Alanis Morissette and Shania Twain. So many amazing songwriters, musicians and women who rocked.

Is there another artist you'd like to see make a Pinterest board of their inspo?

Metallica. I love their vintage shirts and they are one of my favorite bands. I had the opportunity to act MTV icon: Metallica. There's nothing like meeting your idols and having a positive experience. They're all a bunch of great guys. I would love to see your Pinterest boards!

What's the best fan recreation of one of your looks you've seen on tour so far?

A lot of people wear shirts and ties in the audience on our tour. We have a full “Sk8er Boi” t-shirt and tie in our merchandise, so it's fun to see that in the crowd.
