Directed by Calmatic (House Party) and co-written by Kenya Barris (Black-ish), White Men Can’t Jump is a modern update to the very 90s original about an unexpected pair of street ballers hustling their way through the Los Angeles basketball courts in order to make their way towards a large cash prize. Sinqua Walls (Teen Wolf) and musical artist Jack Harlow take the lead as the main duo who reluctantly work together to earn enough to try pulling their families out of poverty — but getting over themselves long enough to win the tournament could be one hurdle they can’t jump over. – Tauri Miller

Written by director Anna Zlokovic, this twisted comedy stars fashion designer Hannah (Hadley Robinson), whose spiraling imposter syndrome eventually manifests itself as a growth — the titular appendage — on her body. An embodiment of her deepest anxieties, the appendage slowly takes control of her life, destroying her relationships and aggressively harming her health. A comedy in its script and a horror on the screen, Appendage tackles themes much deeper than the surface suggests, with the journey of the protagonist acting as a metaphor for anxiety’s vice-like grip on today’s younger generation. Oz Rodriguez directs Miguel Wants to Fight, a hilarious coming-of-age comedy centered on teenager Miguel (Tyler Dean Flores) and his attempt to stay in control when everything around him begins to change. Miguel Wants to Fight delightfully challenges machismo and toxic masculinity through an unexpected story of growing up in a tough neighborhood where Miguel and his trio of besties – played by Christian Vunipola, Imani Lewis, and Suraj Partha – embark on some ridiculous misadventures. Sammi Cohen directs Crush, an enchanting romantic comedy starring Rowan Blanchard. Crafted from the first feature script by writers Kirsten King and Casey Rackham, Crush is a hilarious queer romance about an art student (Blanchard) who uncharacteristically joins the track team in an attempt to woo her love interest, played by Isabella Ferreira. Supported by a wonderfully talented cast, Crush co-stars Auli’i Cravalho (Moana), Teala Dunn, and Megan Mullally. Through love triangles, mishaps, and charmingly adorable moments, Crush is a refreshing addition to the teen romance genre with a grounded and splendidly queer story. – Yael Tygiel

Co-starring David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah (Class), Rye Lane reveals how a chance encounter can bloom into a bouquet of emotional vulnerability, trust, and — ultimately — love. Co-written by Nathan Bryon and Tom Melia, the dialogue and story of Rye Lane weave deftly between clever wit, charming tone, and authenticity. The winner of the 2021 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, Another Round is a movie that starts as a hilarious idea between four friends and quickly becomes a melancholy reflection on life. It begins with a mesmerizing Mads Mikkelsen as Martin who has an otherwise normal life as a teacher. However, Martin is unhappy and looking for something more. That is when he joins his other friends and fellow teachers in drinking all the time as a test to see how it will impact their lives. It is a sweet portrait of friendship that also becomes a somber experience as their lives begin to unravel as they push themselves too far. It is another outstanding film that unites Mikkelsen and writer-director Thomas Vinterberg, who previously collaborated on the haunting film The Hunt. However, this one also sees Mikkelsen do an impressive and cathartic dance sequence, which makes it a must-see on its own. – Chase Hutchinson

She’s top of her senior class, she has a full ride to MIT, she is the reigning champion of the teen innovation conference STEMCon, and she has a boyfriend just as smart as she is. Avery becomes obsessed with finding the one true answer to having a fulfilling sexual experience by collecting information from her classmates and using her friend Larson (Jake Short) as a test subject. Along the way, she learns a lot about herself, sex, and relationships. Sex Appeal is a unique teen comedy that shows sex as it should be – a meaningful, fun, and sometimes even awkward experience. – Brynna Arens

While on vacation in Mexico, Marcus (Lil Rey Howery) and Emily (Yvonne Orji) become friends with the chaotic but fun Ron (John Cena) and Kyla (Meredith Hagner). The two couples spend the week together getting drunk, doing drugs, and jumping off cliffs. Marcus and Emily are grateful that Ron and Kyla have pushed them outside their comfort zones and given them a vacation they’ll (mostly) remember forever but don’t plan to continue the friendship after they part ways. That changes when Ron and Kyla show up unannounced to Marcus and Emily’s wedding seven months later. At first, Marcus and Emily are apprehensive about the chaotic energy of their vacation friends ruining their wedding but later realize that maybe there’s more to their new friends than they thought. Vacation Friends has an unexpected emotional center that, combined with the phenomenal comedic timing of its core cast, really makes this movie worth the watch. – Brynna Arens

But, Happiest Season serves as a reminder–and even a cautionary tale–that visiting family might not be the most relaxing endeavor. Unbeknownst to Abby, Harper’s uptight family doesn’t know that Harper is in a relationship or that she’s gay. Torn between wanting to spend Christmas with her girlfriend and having to be home for the holidays, Harper invites Abby to the big family Christmas party not as her date, but as her orphaned roommate. Will the couple come out of this situation alive, and will Harper’s family uncover their secret? This sharp festive dramedy emphasizes the power of acceptance and is sure to deliver laughs year-round. — Emily Bernard

A coming of age film that shows Pete Davidson has some good acting chops when paired with a solid director in Jason Orley, Big Time Adolescence is all about the pitfalls of youth and what happens when you outgrow those that you once looked up to. It is centered around Griffin Gluck as Monroe, a young kid who looks up to Davidson’s Zeke despite him being the last person you would think of as being a good role model. There are a lot of expected jokes and gags that one would expect. However, there is a deeper aspect to the film that sneaks up on you as we become increasingly disillusioned with the laid back vibe of Zeke and the negative influence it has on those around him. The dialogue all feels natural and increasingly painful, making it a complicated comedy that becomes something more melancholic when you least expect it. — Chase Hutchinson

The road trip buddy comedy Plan B follows ride-or-die friends Sunny (Kuhoo Verma) and Lupe (Victoria Moroles) on their journey to Planned Parenthood for emergency contraception. After her first high school party leads to an awkward first sexual encounter and a lost condom, straight-A student Sunny panics. Unable to get Plan B from their local pharmacy thanks to South Dakota’s “conscious clause”, she recruits her sex-positive, down-for-anything best friend Lupe to go with her to the nearest Planned Parenthood in Rapid City. Not only do the friends have to contend with a closing window of viability for the pill, but they also have to make it back home before Sunny’s strict mom returns to town. Even though this raunchy comedy is absolutely created by and for women, there’s something for almost everyone in Sunny and Lupe’s journey. Plan B balances humorous and heartfelt moments effortlessly, with both emotions likely to leave you in tears. Add it to your watch list ASAP! — Brynna Arens

The romantic comedy Palm Springs is one of the best films of 2020 full-stop. The set-up is fairly simple – Andy Samberg and Cristin Millioti play strangers who meet at a wedding – but the execution is complicated and wonderful. You see, Samberg’s character has been stuck in a time loop for ages, reliving the same day over and over again. Complications arise when Millioti’s character gets sucked into the time loop as well, and a wonderfully hilarious, sweet, and introspective story ensues. This is one of the best romcoms in recent memory. – Adam Chitwood
