The Caistor Bonfire Night was canceled due to safety concerns

Caistor's popular firework display has been canceled due to health and safety reasons.

One of Lincolnshire's best-loved fireworks displays has been cancelled. Caistor's bonfire and firework which attracts thousands of visitors has been canceled due to health and safety reasons.

Thousands of people attend the Caistor and District Lions event at South Street Park every year and a club spokesman said it was “very sorry” to have to cancel it, but safety comes first.

They said: “After last month's heavy rains, the ground is already waterlogged in both the park and the CYA sports field. With more heavy rain forecast for the next few days, we are not sure we will be able to offer the 'event this year with the same high standards of safety and organization that you have come to expect from us over the years.

“We would almost certainly cause serious surface damage to South Street Park and the school's sports field parking lot; this would be a hazard to all attendees and workers at the event, expensive to fix and take months for both areas to recover enough to be available for normal use. This could put future bonfire nights in jeopardy if we lose the good will of the school or the council, the loss of permission to use either venue would make it impossible to host next year's event.

“After almost 40 years of successful bonfire nights, never having canceled due to bad weather, we were very reluctant to make this decision, but after four days of considering different options, numerous field inspections and constantly reviewing the weather forecast, it seemed that In the interest of everyone's safety and well-being, our only sensible course was to cancel the event.

“We are very grateful for the great support people have given us over the years and it is very sad to disappoint everyone. Sorry again.

“Watch this space, we'll be back.”
