The world is currently focused on Taylor Swift’s concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, but it’s not the only high-profile such production coming to the big screen. Later this year, Beyoncé has a similar concert-focused project slated to arrive, and it’s bound to be a huge success as well. In addition to future box office grosses that are sure to grab headlines, the singer’s movie could potentially bring her back to the Oscars…though in what category is not yet clear.
Beyoncé’s Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé could potentially help the superstar return to the Academy Awards as a nominee, though it will likely be weeks before it’s stated for certain whether it’s even eligible for any categories. Much is still not known about the title, and that’s probably how it will stay for weeks, if not months.
The immediate question is whether Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé will be eligible to compete for Best Documentary Feature Film. The rules stipulate that pure performance movies can’t be submitted, so that ruled out Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. Early reports suggest that Bey’s film is more than just a camera capture of her concert though, so that changes things.
If Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé is more of a proper documentary than a real concert film, it could be a contender…or at least be submitted for voters to decide for themselves. Bey is one of the biggest and most interesting musicians in the world, and millions would love to see her work ethic and her creativity projected onto the big screen. Whether such a behind-the-scenes look will be truly worthy of a nomination is hard to say, but chances are the world won’t know if it’s even really eligible for this vertical for weeks, if not until it’s actually released.
The other potential option for Beyoncé when it comes to this year’s Academy Awards is Best Original Song. The singer-songwriter has been working to win this specific prize for many years, but she’s been shut out time and time again. If Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé features a track she writes and produces specifically for the movie, it could immediately become one to watch. As long as the song is actually featured in the film and not just over the credits, it’s eligible.
After years of submitting excellent work for the Best Original Song category, Beyoncé finally earned her first Oscar nomination at the 2021 ceremony for her single “Be Alive” from the movie King Richard. That year, the honor went to Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas. The pair won the Academy Award for their tune “No Time To Die” from the James Bond movie of the same name.
So far, Beyoncé and her team haven’t said anything about a new song in Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, but that doesn’t mean anything. The singer and her camp are known for remaining mum about almost everything. If there is a brand new piece of music in the movie, it might not be heard until opening night when fans finally get to see the picture in theaters.
