First season of Grand Cayman: Secrets in Paradise has reached the end, and the entire cast of the reality series has since had time to reflect on who they were before filming began and after. Several cast members went through life-changing experiences while filming the freshman season. One of those cast members is Chelsea Flynn, who, at the beginning of the season, was very much in love with her now ex-boyfriend., Tyson. The pair had their issues long before the season started.

Chelsea is one of several expats in the series' cast, and originally moved to Grand Cayman with her ex-husband. Later, she met Tyson, who quickly swept her off her feet. Their relationship began, and soon, Chelsea learned that she was pregnant. This happy news quickly soured when she learned that Tyson cheated on her. He managed to smooth things over, and when the shoot started, she was still happy with him. His friends, on the other hand, were much less enthusiastic about him, especially Courtney McTaggart.

Chelsea and Courtney are extremely close, and Courtney opened up about her dislike of Tyson, but also did what she could to support her friend. That's what made the brawl at Victoria Coleman's bachelorette party all the more shocking. Chelsea, who had just broken up with Tyson, was still emotionally fragile at the party, leading to a huge misunderstanding between her and Courtney. They finally reconciled, and now there is nothing but love and gratitude between the two friends. Collider spoke with Chelsea and Courtney about the experience and how their friendship got them both through tough times.

Chelsea and Courtney were close friends when filming Grand Cayman: Secrets in Paradise first startedWhen asked about what the shoot was like, Courtney said, “You're seeing our real relationship. We have a foundation of trust, of, you know? True love for each other and wanting to see that the other is going well. Chelsea's relationship with me specifically, I think we both appreciate the same characteristics in each other and we really appreciate the honesty, and also that space to navigate situations without judgment.”

Collider spoke with several cast members of Freeform's new reality series 'Grand Cayman: Secrets of Paradise' ahead of the series premiere.

She added: “You have to have that balance in a friendship – letting someone know you'll always be there for them, but also not ostracize them. [them].” Chelsea added to this, providing more information about their friendship. She shared, “Courtney was literally my first friend on the island. He has been with me through it all. She met my ex-husband when we moved to the island together. You know, she was friends with both of them. When I went through a divorce, it was like the Court going through a divorce. He's been there during my pregnancy, my first child.”

He added: “I left the land of the island for a while, but I came back and the relationship and friendship that Court and I have had over the past 10 years has been constant. I respect what he says, you know? And as she says, she doesn't judge me; she warned me about certain situations, [and] I still got into certain situations, but she loved me anyway.”

True friendship is not one where one person says what the other person wants to hear instead of being truthful. In this kind of friendship, people hold each other accountable and take responsibility for their mistakes when the time comes. The explosion between Chelsea and Courtney at the bachelorette party is an excellent example of this. Chelsea knew her behavior got out of hand at that point, and she finally owned up and apologized, which was all Courtney needed to make things right between them again.

There are multiple forms of abuse that can occur in a romantic relationship. Physical abuse is the most talked about as the results are often visible, but emotional abuse is something many struggle with without realizing it is abuse. Emotional or psychological abuse is “Abuse [that] includes non-physical behaviors intended to control, isolate, or frighten you. This can present itself in romantic relationships as threats, name-calling, constant surveillance, excessive jealousy, manipulation, humiliation, intimidation and contempt, among others.” Chelsea's relationship with Tyson was certainly emotionally abusive and, in retrospect, the signs were always there.

As much as my friends said, “It's not good for you, just leave,” it's not that simple. Especially when you have a child with that person. But my friends who love me… they just couldn't stand it. Seeing me so broken. My mother moved from England to Cayman because she saw how broken he was from this abusive relationship.”

The dismissive behavior that Tyson displayed the few times he was seen in the series was very clear, and now, Chelsea hopes other women can see what she initially couldn't. She said: “I'm so proud of the woman I am today, a year later. And it was actually really hard to watch the episodes and see the woman I was.” Although the episodes were difficult to relive, Chelsea worked to not judge herself. “I enjoy myself. I try not to be too nasty to myself about the choices I made, but I take responsibility for choosing this man,” she shared, adding, “I just hope women see that and recognize those red flags; they don't just appear out of nowhere. They were there in the beginning. So choose better, you know? Choose a man who has the characteristics of someone who will be a sustainable long-term partner.”

Both Chelsea and Courtney learned a lot about themselves and their own friendship during filming and after filming ended. Chelsea said: “Now that I'm in a much more healed space, I almost feel like I have one, it's rubbed off on me. Some of Courtney's sanity. I have this clarity where I don't think I'll be so over the top to give people the luxury of these angry reactions from me in the future. Therefore, protect your peace because it is a blessing. Not everyone deserves a reaction from you.

Courtney echoed Chelsea's sentiments, saying: “I would also say it just reiterates the importance of, like I said, having people you know and trust around you. I appreciate it more 1716038045 because I keep hearing people say, “Oh, your friendship is amazing,” and I'm like, “Isn't that the standard? Shouldn't that be the case? But I think when you realize that a lot of people don't work that way, and maybe real friendships and friendships are harder to come by.” She added, “I'm grateful to know that I have a solid base of people here that I know I love and trust.” Confidence is crucial, especially when facing the world as a budding reality TV star.
