While Pine has always done a great job of showing that Kirk has a great sense of humor, his complexion turns much more serious when he briefs his crew on the impending mission. Kirk realizes that everything he comes from, including his family and friends on Earth, is at stake. It's the first instance in the film where he develops a talent for heroism that is entirely selfless, and not out of a desperate attempt to prove himself worthy to the other characters.

Although the final sequence features the kind of kinetic action that is common in Abrams films, Star Trek shows how Pine's Kirk has learned from his eclectic experiences. Star Trek begins with a chilling opening sequence that includes Chris Hemsworth like Kirk's father, George, who sacrifices himself to save the crew of the Kelvin of a Romulan attack. Pine gives Kirk a chance to mirror his father's heroic action, as he enters the mission with an acknowledgment that he could easily die. Although the Romulans were responsible for the death of his father, Pine does not turn Kirk into a vengeful character; rather, his heroic efforts indicate that Kirk has learned to take pride in his family name.
