After years since the success of the 2009 animated film, coraline, director Henry Selick has announced that he would adapt another one Neil Gaimanworks of The ocean at the end of the lane is a 2013 novel described as a somewhat contrasting story Coralineand according to the animated film director, he sees this film as a spiritual sequel to the beloved stop-motion story.

In an interview with Variety, Selick praised Gaiman's 2013 novel and said his vision for this film adaptation would be a “companion piece” Coraline. According to Deadline, plans to adapt this novel were first announced on 2013 and was to be produced by Focus Features and by Tom Hanks production company, Playtone Partners. However, it seems that these plans did not come to fruition.

Coraline is a film based on Gaiman's 2002 children's horror novel. It follows Coraline Jones, a young woman who visits a world similar to her own, but if her parents were more loving and attentive to her. It is later revealed that her “other mother” (aka Beldam) plans to steal her soul, sewing buttons into Coraline's eyes with her consent. The film has been a huge success since its release, being nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs. It also received a Certified Fresh Critics Score of 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed over $131 million at the global box office.
