‘Despicable Me 4’ International Box Office Gives the Minions a Head Start

last weekend, Despicable Me 4 got off to a strong start at the international box office, opening in four markets and setting records along the way. The momentum generated by the animated sequel in its opening weekend has continued to propel it forward as it opened in 16 more markets, including Chile, Colombia and Ecuador, for a total of 20 market releases. Having accumulated a an impressive $9.4 million in its debut weekendthe sequel expanded its global take, adding another $13.9 million in total, bringing its cumulative total to $25.3 million. Despicable Me 4 has now set new records for the weekend ending June 30, 2024, surpassing the earning capacity of previous franchise entries as Minions: The Rise of Gru, Despicable Me 3, i Despicable Me 2, minionsin its opening and second weekend at the box office.


For the second weekend at the international box office, Despicable Me 4 opened in Chile at number one overall this weekend with a massive $2.5 million on 290 screens. Colombia will then open on 520 screens this weekend, reaching $1.7 million for a 37% market share. Despicable Me 4Inauguration of Colombia is in line with Despicable Me 3 and way up Despicable Me 2. The animated sequel could have an impressive run in the South American nation, having opened on a historically profitable weekend playing with school holidays and a national holiday on Monday, July 1. Other notable opening locations include Hong Kong with a strong $0.9 million on 73 screens, Ecuador with $0.6 million on 251 screens, and Finland with $0.5 million on 120 screens. Other notable mentions include Portugal with an impressive $0.5M from 102 screens and South Africa with $0.4M from 100 screens.


Argentina, New Zealand and Australia were the most prominent performers the sequel's opening weekend. The trio of markets continued to maintain that momentum moderately, with Australia adding another $3.7 million that pushed the film's cume to $9.7 million. Argentina and New Zealand have added $1.1 million for an amount of $5.2 million and $0.5 million for $1.5 million respectively.


'Despicable Me 4' has a shot at history

During its two opening weekends, Despicable Me 4 has shown enough potential to propel the franchise to and beyond $5 billion. The animated sequel has yet to open in the U.S. with a July 4th weekend debut projected to earn more than $100 million over a four-day period. The film's biggest competition is to come Inside out 2 which had a record opening of $295 million, and is the highest grossing film of 2024. It should Despicable Me 4 living up to expectations, it could end up as one of the top-grossing films of the summer of 2024.
