‘Drink beer and punch each other’… Alexander Gustafsson recalled what people thought when he started MMA

Alexander Gustafsson shared insights into the bizarre misunderstandings people had about MMA when he first entered the sport.

At the height of his career, the Swedish fighter was an exceptional performer, captivating audiences with his refined boxing technique.

Although he never claimed a UFC world championship, he delivered memorable performances against fighters like Glover Teixeira and Jimi Manuwa, and tested Jon Jones in one of his most challenging bouts.

Long before reaching the elite level of the world`s top MMA organization, he competed locally, far from the spotlight.

Gustafsson Recalls Early Perceptions of MMA

Gustafsson explained in an interview, “While this misunderstanding probably doesn`t exist much anymore, there was a time when many people believed only gangsters participated in MMA. Since it was very underground, the common idea was that we`d just drink beer and beat each other up in a basement.”

Fortunately, with the growth of major promotions like the UFC, Oktagon, and ONE Championship, fans globally have gained a much better appreciation for the immense athleticism and skill required in mixed martial arts.

Gustafsson Notes Positive Shift in MMA Perception

Having dedicated his life to the sport, Gustafsson expressed his satisfaction with this change, stating, “Within the martial arts community, I think MMA is now widely accepted as a legitimate sport. People understand what they`re watching. This is vital, as misunderstandings often stem from a lack of comprehension.”

He added, “I often felt criticism from traditional sports towards MMA was unfair, especially considering the wider range of techniques we use. But honestly, I don`t sense a general negative attitude towards MMA within the global martial arts community anymore. We`ve moved past that.”
