The original Dyson Supersonic hair dryer came out in 2016 and revolutionized the hair care market as the fastest, quietest, smartest and certainly most stylish hair dryer. As a beauty editor, I've been happily using the same one ever since, and it's still performing just as well, even after a lot of use (and many drops).
But of course, Dyson isn't content to let a good invention sit unimproved. On April 24th, I got a look at the brand's new and most advanced version of the hair dryer yet, called the Nural Supersonic, which will be available for purchase in May.
With some smart and useful improvements that make me want to upgrade my old bail, the Supersonic Nural gets its name from the sensors that activate various functions, including scalp protection mode, pause detection and learning of attachments. The first detects the proximity of the dryer to your head using an invisible infrared beam and adapts the air temperature to maintain effective heat on your head and scalp even as you move the dryer closer and further away. Meanwhile, pause-sensing capability automatically turns off heat and decreases airflow and noise when you're between design passes. And for each attachment, the dryer also remembers the last heat setting used and adjusts accordingly as you change parts.
But as someone who's still learning how to diffuse properly to get some texture out of my unpredictable wavy hair, I'm especially excited about the Wave + Curl Diffuser. It's a two-piece accessory that can be used as a typical diffuser for defined, voluminous curls or act as a diffuser bowl that coats hair with downward airflow for longer waves and less frizz. Faster and easier at-home styling with less heat on the scalp, absolutely brilliant.
