Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, the long-awaited expansion to the acclaimed action RPG, received a new trailer on Tuesday, detailing the game's story and explaining pieces of lore. The story trailer delved into the backstory of Malenia's Miquella brother and offered another look at his main antagonist, Messmer the Impaler. Shadow of the Erdtree launches on June 21st on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X.

The three-minute long cinematic trailer delves into the history of the Shadow Realm, the new location where the expansion takes place. The trailer mentions a betrayal that led to the birth of both Gold and Shadow. The trailer then talks about the fiery war in the Shadowland, a “purge without grace or honor.” We have another appearance of Messmer and his destructive flame that left the earth in ruins.

The cryptic trailer doesn't give us much away, but it does set up the pieces of its story, sparking a new adventure in the Shadowland, a whole new world within the Elden Ring. Shadow of the Erdtree is said to be FromSoftware's biggest expansion to date. The DLC map is going to be big, with a lot to do. Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki had hinted at the size of the expansion back in February. “It's hard to answer without giving too much away and with a high degree of precision, but if you think in terms of scale or size, it's probably comparable, if not bigger, than the Limgrave area in the base game,” he said. IGN at the time.

The first major expansion for Elden Ring was announced in February 2023, teasing an image for eager fans. Shadow of the Erdtree received its first trailer in February 2024, detailing new gameplay features, story, and world. The first trailer also confirmed the expansion's release date.

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is currently available for pre-order on the Steam, PlayStation and Xbox stores, with a release set for June 21st. It's worth noting that the base game would be required to play the expansion.
