At the home of its local rival Liverpool, Everton picked up its first win of the 2023/24 Women’s Super League season, much to the delight of its supporters gathered in Anfield.

Liverpool’s women’s team usually plays its home games at Prenton Park, which is also the home of Tranmere Rovers FC on the other side of the River Mersey in Birkenhead, but for such an occasion as the Merseyside Derby, Anfield is appropriate.

A total of 23,088 spectators were in attendance to witness this Everton win, but they might not have initially expected the result given the way Liverpool started the game.

Missy Bo Kearns had the ball in the back of the net within five minutes, but as the players celebrated in front of the Kop, the referee’s assistant raised her flag.

The assistant on that side of the pitch was called into action again shortly after to judge whether Ceri Holland’s shot had crossed the line.

Replays not only showed that it hadn’t, but also that it was a great save from Everton goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan to tip the shot onto the bar in the first place.

The Kop end and the Sir Kenny Dalglish stand had been opened up for this game, and both were full, with a few more dotted across the Main Stand’s hospitality areas.

Tickets were priced so as to offer an affordable family day out. Adult tickets were available for £10 ($12) with over 65s and under 18s tickets costing just £1.

Across the two stands, Everton blue mixed with Liverpool red. A section of Everton supporters in the bottom corner of the Kop made themselves even more noticeable, rising to cheer when Megan Finnigan scored the opening goal.

The center-back broke away from the busy central area in front of the Liverpool goal as Katrine Veje’s corner came in, before heading the ball home from her position at the far post.

It’s not very often you will see Everton fans in the Kop end of Liverpool’s Anfield home and they made the most of it, bringing their own flags and banners to the occasion, proudly displaying them in Liverpool’s iconic stand.

Everton attacked that end in the second half and almost added a second from another corner, but Justine Vanhaevermaet headed a good chance wide.

Liverpool pressed high, defenders regularly stepping out of the backline to apply pressure, but Everton managed to absorb it.

In attack, the home side did occasionally threaten, but after that opening flurry containing the disallowed goal and the shot that hit the bar, they didn’t look like finding the net.

Kearns, Marie Höbinger, Nathasha Flint and Mia Enderby all tried their luck at various points, but to no avail.

The crowd were treated to the sight of Liverpool goalkeeper Rachael Laws going up for a corner in the final seconds, but again, they couldn’t make anything of it.

Everton’s players were greeted with cheers from their pocket of fans in the Kop as they went over to celebrate, and they remained there long after the final whistle, signing autographs and savouring the win.
