Hit-and-run revenge killer jailed for life: Shocking crime in Grimsby

The hit and run incident in Grimsby resulted in the death of Reece Braithwaite. Liam Boydell's deliberate attack has shattered lives and left a lasting impact on the community.

A Grimsby man who mowed down and killed a man in a revenge attack targeting Grimsby has been jailed.

Liam Boydell, a 23-year-old from Columbus Way, Grimsbywas sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Reece Braithwaite.

The incident happened on May 21, when Boydell deliberately drove his Vauxhall Crossland into Braithwaite on Carnforth Crescent. Reece Braithwaite, 35, was seriously injured and died in hospital three days later.

Investigations by Humberside Police revealed that Boydell targeted Braithwaite because of an unfounded rumor that Braithwaite was involved in a romantic relationship with a relative of one of Boydell's friends.

This rumor fueled Boydell's anger and motivated his reprehensible actions.

During the sentencing hearing held at Hull Crown Court, Liam Boydell pleaded guilty to the charge of murder. The judge, in recognition of the seriousness of the crime, sentenced Boydell to life in prison.

Boydell was ordered to serve a minimum term of 20 years before being eligible for parole. This substantial sentence reflects the court's recognition of the devastating impact of Boydell's actions on the victim's family, friends and wider community.

“This was an indefensible and merciless attack on a man who had his whole life ahead of him and everything to look forward to.

“Boydell has left Reece's loved ones to navigate the extremely difficult and heartbreaking journey of life without their son, brother and father.”

The loss of Reece Braithwaite has left his family and friends struggling with deep grief and the challenge of moving on without their beloved son, brother and father.

Now they face the difficult task of rebuilding their lives, forever scarred by the tragic and senseless act of violence committed by Liam Boydell.

A second individual, Thomas McLaughlin, 19, was also charged with murder in connection with the incident. However, due to insufficient evidence, the charge against McLaughlin was later dropped.
