Harmony Korine’s Elsewhere ‘AGGRO DR1FT’ Screening, DJ Set

It seems like, in 2024, everyone has a creative side project: a zine, a podcast, a Substack. For Harmony Korine, the independent director behind films like Spring Breakers i Gummy, is a budding DJ career. As part of the world tour of his latest film, AGGRO DR1FTa private screening at Elsewhere in Bushwick turned into an all-night party with Korine hitting the booth around 1am.

Korine's films are full of eclectic fashion choices, and her April 16th event did not disappoint. The guest list leaned more EDM, and fittingly, partygoers sported everything from camo hats and metal band T-shirts to cowboy boots and coonskin caps. The women wore oversized Carhartt jackets, the men wore fanny packs. Everyone had a can of Model in hand. The room was part cyberpunk, part Thrasher magazine, a part of college dorm fun. If that sounds like a bad combination, then it is AGGRO DR1FT not the movie for you.

What ADD DR1FT is, however, is unlike any of Korine's other films, or any film. Korine has said before how the future of cinema is to merge with the world of games and AGGRO DR1FT —which was shot entirely in infrared— delivers this philosophy with stripped down visuals from games like Call of Duty i hello, set in ultraviolet tones. (This blends nicely into the large venue with beaming laser lights on the ceiling.) Although the film is more art than narrative, the story follows BO, an assassin who sets out to kill a demonic crime lord , amidst a bunch of scenes with BO's wife twerking for him or BO partying with strippers on a superyacht alongside his friend Zion, played by Travis Scott. The movie itself is full of knife fights, little people with machetes, and other violent moments, but rendered in infrared, it looks more like a highly stylized video game than anything else. If the audience didn't like the story, they were all prepared for the visual treatment that Korine provided, and that unhinged vibe underscored the rest of the party.

In no time, the night went from a mild CBD gummy to a full blown fever dream. Duck Mobb, Korine and composer AGGRO DR1FT AraabMuzik got behind the DJ booth. With each new performer, the atmosphere changed from laser light displays to white-clad dancers with neon hair, horned demons, little people with nerf guns, and a woman in a gimp outfit and sunglasses portraying a of the characters in the film. The crowd of dancers bounced to Metallica or deep house music. The constricting rules of what things are supposed to be – a movie, a fashion sense, a DJ set – fell away. Whatever happens, happens. And overall, what happened was probably exactly what Korine had in mind to deliver the film his public
