In fact, it was in 1980 that Diana used her clothes to apparently communicate with the public. While attending a polo match, she wore a fire truck red knit sweater with a bold print featuring white sheep and a black sheep. Many believed the not-so-subtle impression was Diana's way of signaling that she felt like an outsider.
But whether its intended message or not, the Warm & Wonderful sweater became an instant hit. The label recently collaborated with Sperry to add the print to the shoes, further proving the princess' lasting impact.
And who could forget Diana's royal wedding in 1981, where she made jaws drop with her 25-foot train hand-embroidered with sequins and pearl embellishments.
“She couldn't make a small dress look calm and understated,” designer David Emanuel featured on E! News 2021. “The pomp and ceremony and all that, I remember laughing with her.”
Another fabulous 80s moment? A polka dot blouse with dramatic puffed sleeves and a peek-a-boo neckline. Taken to a polo match, it was recreated by the deceased Virgil Abloh in 2017, among other famous Diana looks, for Off-White's spring/summer 2018 collection.
“He was a strong person,” said the designer british vogue at the time. “His personal taste was so far removed from what he was supposed to wear. He's an inspiration.”
