Tom and Nicole adopted their oldest son, Isabellawhen he was born on December 22, 1992.
It's true that he was “scared to death” the first time a diaper was changed, Tom said VF in 1994 that he and Nicole “talked about kids from time to time, but there was always work. But then we said, When is the right time? That's how the conversation started. You're lying in bed. at night and you're trying to sleep, so you roll over and go, What if we had that in our life?… One of the things that Nic and I talk about is that now all of a sudden we're a family.”
Nicole said they definitely plan to have more children, either by birth or adoption, preferably both.
“Isabella was meant for us,” he told the magazine. “I think when things come into your life at a certain time, you have to take them. It's fate.”
He later revealed that VF in 2007 that they decided to adopt after she lost a pregnancy. “From the moment Tom and I got married, I wanted to have kids,” she said. “And we lost a baby early on, so it was very traumatic. And that's when we were going to adopt Bella.”
“There is a complicated background,” he added, “given that I never talk about many things. One day this story may be told.”
