Raglan James' journey through Anne Rice's books is a rollercoaster ride

AMC Interview with the vampire is based on a series of books by Rice, collectively named The Vampire Chronicles — i cconsidering it consists of 13 books, crossovers are more than likely going to happen as the Immortal Universe continues to grow on screen. In fact, he had already done that it happened thanks to the spin-off Witches of Mayfairwhich first aired in 2023 starring Alexandra Daddario. Also, with recent news from AMC, it greenlights another show set in the same universe, currently titled The Talamascait will only be a matter of time before certain characters appear in either show and interact with each other. He has an interview with the vampire has already given audiences a little tease of what it would be like thanks to the appearance of Raglan James in Season 2. Knowing about his rollercoaster of a story is important, as he has connections to many beloved characters. The question is: how important is the role of Raglan James The Vampire Chronicles?

Raglan James is first introduced to The tale of the body thief, the fourth book in The Vampire Chronicles, in which he is the Body Thief of the title. This book is narrated by Lestat (played by Sam Reid on the show), who is going through depression and doubts about her vampire nature, as well as Claudia (played by Bailey Bass i Delainey Hayles in seasons 1 and 2, respectively) dead. Along the way, Lestat meets a mysterious man named Raglan James. It turns out that James has psychic abilities and is apparently able to switch bodies with anyone – from humans to supernatural creatures. Knowing how fragile Lestat's mind is, Raglan takes this as an opportunity to ask him if he'd like to switch bodies for a day, just to change things up a bit.

This idea is something that Lestat's human friend David Talbot is completely against, revealing that he actually knows who Raglan is and his reputation within the psychic community. David explains it Raglan used to be a member of the Talamasca, a secret organization focused on keeping track of all things supernatural to maintain balance within the world. However, Raglan was kicked out of the Talamasca due to his kleptomaniac tendencies. Everything he has is stolen, even the bodies, so he's not exactly welcome in the organization anymore.

Despite David's unconditional advice, Lestat agrees to switch bodies with Raglan, though things turn sour when the vampire realizes that Raglan has no plans to return his body anytime soon. The body in which Lestat is trapped, he learns, is actually suffering from pneumonia, which almost causes his death. After an amazing recovery, Lestat enlists David's help to get his body back. In the end, with Raglan trying one last trick, the vampire kills the body thief, ending the character's rather chaotic journey.

Raglan James first appears in Interview with the vampire Season 2 in the episode “No Pain”, specifically in the opening scene. He approaches Daniel in a fancy restaurant in Dubaiasking about their interviews with Louis and Armand, and the reporter becomes curious because this mysterious man seems to know a batch about vampires and the supernatural world as a whole. Raglan does not reveal how he obtained this knowledge, leaving Daniel to theorize about who he works for (with his best guess being MI6).

Later in the same episode, Suddenly, Raglan gives Daniel extensive access to Talamasca's archive files to help with his interview, especially the files on Louis, Lestat and Armand, which changes everything for the journalist. These files later prove beneficial in “Don't Be Afraid, Just Start the Tape”, as Daniel uses them to uncover the truth about what happened to him in San Francisco during his first (failed) interview with Louis.

Raglan James can only have one scene Interview with the vampire so far, but from what we have seen so far, it will be very important in the future. With the upcoming Talamasca series greenlit, airing on AMC next year, it's likely we'll learn even more about who this man is, as well as the truth about the secret organization he works for. In the books, Raglan is a powerful and intelligent man who uses his abilities for selfish reasons, and right now it is not clear what his motivation is to give Daniel all this information about the vampires he's interviewing. Hopefully, we'll get to see more of Raglan James in the future, either in future episodes Interview with the vampire or any of the shows that make up AMC's Immortal Universe.
