Apple would have started developing next year's operating systems for its devices. The report comes just a month after the Cupertino tech giant unveiled iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, watchOS 11 and visionOS 2 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024. iOS 18, which will be released publicly this fall, is coming home. screen customization, Control Center improvements, RCS support and more. While not much is known about what iOS 19 might bring, the company is said to have codenamed it Luck.

The information comes from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, who mentions that the company has formally begun developing major operating systems for 2025. These include iOS 19 for iPhone, macOS 16 for Mac devices, watchOS 12 for Apple Watch and visionOS 3 for Apple Vision Pro.
Citing unnamed sources, Gurman claims that Apple has also assigned dedicated codenames for each of the aforementioned operating systems. While iOS 19 is called Luck, macOS 16 has been called Cheer. watchOS 12 is internally named Nepali, while visionOS 3 is internally named Discovery. Remarkably, these code names mean nothing about the new features the operating system might bring.
The report highlights that the company's work for next year's operating systems begins at a time when it is also fine-tuning the current year's operating system that will be released in the fall. However, this is not unusual for the tech giant, which typically begins its software creation process around this time of year. Gurman also claims that the company has also started developing the hardware products for next year and will require the software to test the devices.
Because it is very early in the software development cycle, no new features or changes are known at this stage. However, the leaks are expected to arrive in the coming days. Separately, Apple is also preparing to publicly release iOS 18 later this year. The company recently released iOS 18 Developer Beta 2 with iPhone Mirroring, a new option for RCS Messaging (currently not enabled), and a new dark-themed icon for the App Store.
