'Dances with Wolves' (1990)
One of the most successful westerns ever made and Kevin Costner's directorial debut, Dances with Wolves, is a true testament to the most modern western stories. In a way, the film is narratively similar Horizon: An American Saga given that it is ultimately a commentary on the colonization of the West. Costner plays Lt. John Dunbar, a Union soldier instructed to control a key area in the ongoing Civil War conflict. While doing so, Dunbar meets and befriends an attempted local Sioux Native American, and quickly begins to question the state of his country.

'Wyatt Earp' (1994)
while headstone might be the most popular interpretation of this story, Kevin Costner's portrayal Wyatt Earp certainly nothing to scoff at. Costner plays the legendary US Marshal Wyatt Earp, who became incredibly famous for his efforts to bring order to the Wild West. Although there are many stories about the historical figure, Wyatt Earp is one of the best.

'Open Range' (2003)
Finally, Kevin Costner's next-to-last directorial feature before that Horizon: An American Saga is Open range. In this simple but effective Western thriller, Costner is a retired gunslinger who just wants to make a simpler, quieter life for himself. That goal suddenly becomes more difficult to achieve when a corrupt sheriff and his gang of friends decide to take over the place he calls home, and that's something that won't sit well with the hero of 'one of Costner's most criminally overlooked epics.
