“Having come so close to winning in Doha, I thought I would stick with the race plan that would set me up to win and if I could pull it off today,” he said.

“I knew I would have to run a really fast time to do that. I focused on what I needed to do to run and I think that's something I'll carry forward with me.”

Hull's Australian teammate and former Ocean record holder Linden Hall finished 12th in 4:01.97 but is building fitness and competing.

Outstanding schoolboy prodigy Cam Myers proved once again that he is a rising star of the sport, not just in Australia but globally, with his performance in the 1500m. Yes, at first glance it sounds rushed for an 11th place finish, but in an elite field, the 17-year-old clocked 3:50.15.

To put this time into perspective, World Athletics does not recognize records for under-18s. But if he did, Myers would have broken him.

Athletics world records are for under-20s only and the under-20 mile record was set last year by Reynold Kipkorir Cheriuyot in a time of 3.48.06. Myers is on his way to becoming part of the next generation of global sports stars.

Such was the quality of the field, Australia's Commonwealth Games medalist Ollie Hoare's time of 3:49.11 only saw him finish ninth.

Curiously, the race was not won by the cheeky Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the man who has made a habit of winning all but the championship races that count, but by his fierce rival Josh Kerr, who put the hard-nosed Scandinavian in his box when he said of Ingebrigtsen had “defects in the track and in the realm of manners”.

It was their first meeting since the 2023 world championships in Budapest, where Kerr won only because Ingebrigsten said she had been ill and would have beaten “the other guy” on any other day.

The next “other day” they ran, which was the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meeting at the weekend, Kerr repeated his effort and closed out Ingebrigtsen, winning in a British record time of 3:45.34, 0.26 seconds ahead of Ingebrigtsen in second place.
