Muay Thai legend John Wayne Parr recently shared insights into his experience training alongside UFC icon Georges St-Pierre.
Both St-Pierre, known as `Rush`, and Parr, `The Gunslinger`, were exceptionally skilled and mentally tough athletes who built impressive careers. St-Pierre, a UFC icon, won titles in two divisions, while Parr, a Muay Thai master, secured ten world championships.
Throughout his professional fighting career, Parr`s notable experiences included sparring with Joe Rogan, competing on The Contender: Asia reality show, and engaging in thrilling battles at Lumpinee Stadium. Yet, he particularly cherishes the memory of traveling to Canada to spar with another prominent figure in combat sports.
Sparring Sessions with Georges St-Pierre Were Highly Enjoyable
In 2013, Parr traveled to Canada to train at Tristar gym and assist Georges St-Pierre with improving his striking. During their time together, these two highly regarded figures in martial arts trained extensively, engaging in productive and exciting sparring exchanges.
Speaking in an interview, Parr recalled, “They were so much fun. Georges was such a great training partner. He was very appreciative of everything I showed him regarding Muay Thai and absorbed it all.”
Parr added that about a week into their training, after they had traveled to New York, coach John Danaher commented to him, expressing significant surprise at how much Georges had improved.
“He was hitting the pads with great power,” Parr stated, “utilizing footwork, slipping effectively. We were preparing for Johny Hendricks, so we focused heavily on countering a southpaw stance. I believe John Danaher was indeed very impressed.”
He reiterated the enjoyment of the experience, saying, “It was so much fun. Georges was great to be around, and his appreciation for what I was teaching him showed he is truly dedicated to martial arts.” Parr concluded by highlighting St-Pierre`s character: “You might see him as a superstar, but in the gym, he`s just like anyone else. He`s incredibly humble and respectful. His kindness was genuinely surprising.”
John Wayne Parr Expresses Desire to Spar Another All-Time Great
After a career where he unequivocally proved his skills in the ring, Parr has now retired, having nothing left to accomplish in competition. Although he has stepped away from competitive fighting, his passion for Muay Thai remains strong.
The 48-year-old now focuses on coaching aspiring fighters at Boonchu Gym in Queensland, Australia. Even though his competitive days are over, Parr mentioned he would still enjoy the opportunity to spar with another legendary figure in the sport.
