Kamaru Usman admits to feeling ‘not healthy’ in his fight preparation for UFC comeback

Kamaru Usman is facing physical challenges as he gears up for his return to the UFC octagon.

The fighter known as `The Nigerian Nightmare` is set to compete for the first time in nearly two years when he squares off against Joaquin Buckley at UFC Atlanta on June 14.

The former UFC Welterweight champion is targeting a potential title opportunity in the near future, provided he secures a victory in this comeback bout.

A period of absence was necessary due to persistent injuries. However, even after this break, Usman reveals he isn`t feeling completely fit just days before the fight.

Usman`s Candid Admission

As his fight in Atlanta approaches, Usman`s preparation has been hampered by ongoing minor injuries and a demanding training camp, preventing him from feeling his absolute best for his highly anticipated UFC return.

Speaking with SHAK MMA about the upcoming clash with Buckley, Usman confessed that the rigorous training camp has left him feeling less than 100% healthy.

Usman stated: “I mean, going through a training camp definitely makes you feel like you’re not healthy. I’ll tell you that. Getting punched and beaten up by training partners like Justin, Archie, and some of these guys definitely makes you feel otherwise.”

He added, “But I’m just blessed for the opportunity to be back. I’m blessed to have another chance to step in, and I’m blessed not just to represent myself and my family, but also my instructors, my coaches, my training partners. So yeah, it’s a wonderful feeling to be back.”

Returning After a Long Hiatus

It has been nearly two full years since Usman last competed in the octagon. His goal is to halt his recent string of losses and work his way back into contention for the UFC Welterweight title.

His extended break from fighting came after a defeat to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294, marking his third consecutive loss.

Prior to the Chimaev fight, Usman suffered back-to-back losses against Leon Edwards in 2022 and 2023, resulting in him losing his championship belt.

At 38 years old and facing persistent issues with his right knee – problems that would likely have ended a lesser fighter`s career – his time competing at the elite level of the UFC appears to be winding down.

Securing a win against Buckley at UFC Atlanta is crucial for Usman to continue his career in the UFC. However, returning after almost two years out of action will present a significant challenge.
