The scheduled WBO lightweight world title fight between Keyshawn Davis and Edwin De Los Santos has been cancelled.
Davis was slated to make his initial defense of the championship on Saturday evening at the Scope Arena in his hometown of Norfolk, Virginia.
However, on Friday, he significantly missed the required weight, coming in 4.3 pounds over the limit. As a direct consequence, the American boxer has been stripped of his world title.
An agreement could not be reached to salvage the Davis vs De Los Santos bout for the fight card. As a result, elite prospect Abdullah Mason`s 10-round match against Namibian contender Jeremia Nakathila has been elevated to the main event.
Keyshawn Davis`s brothers, Kelvin Davis and Keon Davis, are still expected to participate in other fights on the undercard.
This development represents a significant setback for Keyshawn Davis`s burgeoning career. Losing his world title on the scales comes just as he was in a position to pursue major fights within the division.
This unfortunate incident brings an end to a strong period for Davis, which included securing a knockout win over Gustavo Lemos in his hometown and overcoming Ukrainian veteran Denys Berinchyk to claim the world championship at the Madison Square Garden Theatre.
