Khabib Nurmagomedov recently shared a heartfelt homage to the man who significantly shaped his career in mixed martial arts.
The former UFC Lightweight Champion openly credits his remarkable career achievements to his father and long-time coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, who tragically passed away in July 2020 due to complications from COVID-19.
Abdulmanap died at the age of 57, leaving behind a profound and enduring legacy. Fighters who trained under him continue to acknowledge his influence, with PFL champion Gadzhi Rabadanov being a recent example, dedicating his $1 million world title win in December to him.

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s emotional UFC retirement
Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his retirement immediately after submitting Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in October 2020. This significant decision came just three months after his father`s passing.
In a deeply emotional speech following the fight, he explained the reason behind his retirement:
“When the UFC called me about fighting Justin, I spoke with my mother for three days. She didn’t want me to fight without my father, and I told her this would be my last fight – I gave her my word.”
He also took a moment to address his opponent, Gaethje, with words of respect and advice:
“Thank you so much, Justin. I know you are great, I know how you take care of your people. Be close with your parents, because you never know what is going to happen tomorrow.”
As of 2025, Nurmagomedov remains retired from competitive MMA and appears to be content, despite continued calls from fans for him to return.
The 36-year-old has successfully transitioned, emulating his father`s path by becoming a highly regarded and successful combat sports coach.
In his relatively short time as a trainer, Nurmagomedov has already guided his fighters to championship victories in major promotions including the UFC, Bellator, and PFL.
Without question, Abdulmanap would be immensely proud of the impactful work his son has accomplished since stepping away from fighting himself.
