Searchlight Pictures has shared an official synopsis of kind of kindness alongside the trailer, and it might help put at least some of what we see in some order.

KINDS OF KINDNESS is a triptych fable, which follows a man without a choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing at sea has returned and looks like a different person; and a woman determined to find someone in particular with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.
The never-ending quest for control, the return of a missing woman, and possible supernatural abilities, this movie seems to have it all. What it also has are apparent hugs between Jesse Plemons and Willem Dafoe, and that's a stroke of genius from Yorgos Lanthimos in our book.
