We are approximately half an hour away from the publication of the traditional poll at the ballot box coinciding with the end of voting.

More than 40 million people were eligible to vote in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales today in a general election expected to give Labor its first win since 2005.

Predictions of a Labor landslide did not appear to have affected turnout, election officials said. In the last general election, exit polls predicted the result to within a handful of seats.

It is based on a model developed by John Curtice, the guru of British electoral voting, which collects data from 130 carefully selected polling stations around the country.

In 2019, the model predicted Boris Johnson's Conservatives would win an 86-seat majority: they ended up winning an 80-seat majority.

The first results should arrive around 11.30pm local time and proceedings will accelerate steadily from here.
