Retired McLennan County Justice of the Peace Fernando Villarreal waves to guests arriving Friday for a ceremony to officially rededicate the Precinct 5 constable and justice of the peace building at 1800 Richter Ave. as the Fernando M. Villarreal Justice Center.

Villarreal retired in 2022 after 30 years on the bench. He worked with county officials to have the facility built about 16 years ago and was the first judge to hold court there.

LucyAnn Miramontez was elected to the Precinct 5 JP seat after Villarreal’s retirement.

The McLennan County Commissioners Court voted in October to rename the Precinct 5 facility in Villarreal’s honor.

“I can’t think of a more appropriate match between naming a public facility after a very dedicated and well-respected public servant than Fernando Villarreal,” McLennan County Judge Scott Felton said at the time. “He performed all of his duties with excellence.”

The timing of the commissioners’ vote worked out so that Villarreal’s family could surprise him with the news on his birthday last fall.
