The big picture

  • 'Supacell', a British sci-fi series, gained immense popularity, almost rivaling the new season of Bridgerton in ratings.
  • The show's distinct approach to the superhero genre and its focus on the ethics of superpowers contributed to its popularity.
  • Created by Rapman and featuring a talented cast, 'Supacell' has become one of the most popular titles on streaming platforms.

It's always great when a new series gets people excited, but it's even nicer to see its popularity spread like wildfire. Last week, Netflix premiered a British sci-fi series Supacell, and the show's performance has been off the charts ever since. The story centers on a group of five people in London who suddenly discover they have superpowers. Once they locate each other, they must come together, find out what exactly happened to them, and find out why they suddenly became the target of a secret organization.

Earlier this week, Netflix released some viewing numbers for the most watched titles in its catalog, and one of the biggest surprises was that Supacell almost managed to steal the #1 spot in the new season of Bridgerton — one of the most popular series ever on the streaming platform. While season 3 of Bridgerton topped the charts by accumulating 6.6 million views in one week, Supacell was a runner-up, with 6.4 million views. This means that more than 33 million hours of the British series were watched by subscribers everywhere.

Considering the large number of subscribers who have signed up Supacell, word of mouth may make the British series even more popular in the coming week. But of course, we'll have to wait until Netflix reveals its viewership numbers to find out Supacell it keeps growing or people's interests start to wane when it's not such a new title anymore. At the moment, however, the British show is undoubtedly one of the most popular titles on streaming platforms.

Two of the elements that undoubtedly help the popularity of Supacell are related to his approach to the superhero genre. After more than fifteen years of Marvel and DC superheroes flooding our screens, audiences still love these kinds of stories, but everyone is eager to see different angles and possibilities of the superhero world. It's no coincidence that some of the most popular titles of the moment are those that subvert superhero tropes like Prime Video. the boys and the Max animated series Harley Quinn. Supacell could have won hearts and minds over the fact that the ethics of using (and abusing) one's superpowers is an integral part of the story.

Supacell is created by rapmanwho previously directed a brave drama Gangs of London. Casting counts Cough Cole (Bob Marley: One love), Nadine Mills (The Strangers), Eric Kofi Abbreviates (Clarence's book), Calvin Demba (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Josh Tedeku (The pensioners), Adelayo Adedayo (some girls), Rayxia Ojo (Call the midwife), i Ghettos (champion).
