These moments often featured highs of celebration. Who could forget when the United States men's ice hockey team beat the heavily favored Soviet Union in what was called a “miracle on ice” at the 1980 Games in Lake Placid, New York? Or, when Michael Phelps won his first Olympic medal (more like a medals received his six golds and two bronzes) at the 2004 Athens Games, with the American swimmer later becoming the most decorated Olympian of all time with 28 medals.
However, some notable moments featured devastating lows. Take, for example, when British sprinter Derek Redmond he tore his hamstring mid-race at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics (although, determined to finish, he fought through pain and tears to complete the course with his father by his side), or when a figure skater american Nancy Kthey erect was attacked just a month before the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer (where she yet he took the silver).
