Hornby's pre-match statement
Wayne Bennett may not be South Sydney's coach yet, but he's already getting some input. Interim coach Ben Hornby, who has a close relationship with Bennett from his time at the Dragons, revealed ahead of the game that he had sought the super coach's advice before facing the Panthers.
“I spoke to Wayne earlier in the week,” Hornby told Nine. “He's given me some advice and I'll take it, but he's already trying to steal my job, so I can't talk to him too much now.”

Summary of Nicolussi's half
Garner scores and Panthers lead
The 12-0 lead that South Sydney once held seems an eons ago now. Penrith have scored the last three tries, the most recent of which came courtesy of back-rower Luke Garner. Penrith led 18-12 after 32 minutes
Souths face long-term halves problems
As Dr. Zalunardo predicted, Dean Hawkins is not coming back tonight. He also probably won't be seen in a game for a few weeks. With Lachlan Ilias out with a broken leg, it's a case of where to go from here for manager Hornby. A Cody Walker – Jack Wighton combination is an option. Or maybe Latrell will be back in the No. 6 jersey next week. Training is fun, just ask Hornby.
Seven of six nightmares
Yes, they're still down to 12, but Souths only had five tackles and a kick and could only get the ball to the 30m line. Fortunately for their fans, they hold on with a resilient defense.
Score level and Hawkins in fight
After Brad Schneider crossed to level the scores after a South team trailed by just 12, Rabbits No.7 Dean Hawkins injured his upper leg as the game began. This is a new one. Now the Rabbitohs have their full back and middle in all sorts of trouble. Hawkins limps off the field. I'm no doctor, but I'll say we won't be seeing him on the field again tonight. 12-12 after 25 minutes

Panthers on the board as Turuva enters
Sunia Turuva, the man who will be a Wests Tiger next year, scores after a very questionable pass. Souths had given away more restarts and penalties than even Archimedes could count on their lead. This will calm the mountain men. The Souths lead 12-6
Rabbitohs are now down to 12 men
After restarting three sets for the 12-man Panthers, the Rabbitohs are warned they will lose a man in the sin-bin if it happens again. Then they give like two more penalties. Unsurprisingly, the referee sends Jai Arrow to the trash can. Arrow looks angry. He should be, with himself. South 12-0
