Takeru Criticizes K-1 Over Fighter Treatment and Conditions

The former champion slams K-1 management over fighter treatment and public criticism.

Following recent discussions about ONE Championship`s challenges, including an article by Timothy Wheaton detailing losses, layoffs, inactivity, instability, and investor anxiety, former K-1 producer Carlos Kikuta commented on the situation via social media.

Known for his criticism of the Japan-based kickboxing organization, ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong found an echo in Kikuta.

In a subtle jab addressing ONE`s difficulties, Kikuta remarked, “Perseverance is strength!” It`s worth noting that Kikuta departed his role as K-1 producer in December 2024 and is no longer affiliated with K-1 management. This contrasts with K-1 founder and current advisor Kazuyoshi Ishii, who recently expressed a desire for greater collaboration with ONE Championship.

Japanese kickboxing star Takeru was not pleased with the harsh words from his former employer. He responded:

To this, Kikuta replied, “It is precisely because of the respect for the ‘athletes fighting with their lives on the line’ that we cannot stay silent about a management structure that exploits fighters. If the backstage is rotten, no matter how hard the athletes strive, they won`t be rewarded. That`s why raising our voices is worth it, don`t you think?

Takeru then outlined serious issues he claims K-1 fighters face behind the scenes: low fight purses, lack of coverage for injuries and hospital stays, fighters being required to cover their own travel and hotel costs, and highly restrictive contracts featuring automatic renewals, heavy penalties for breaches, and blacklisting clauses preventing fighters from competing elsewhere.

He contrasted these conditions with his experience at ONE Championship, where he stated he finally feels treated like a professional athlete.
