X-Men: The Animated Series is enjoying a timely revival thanks to the popularity of its spiritual sequel, X-Men '97. Considered one of the best cartoons of the 1990s and a bold swing worthy of its socially conscious comic book inspirations, X MenSaturday morning episodes introduced countless kids to Marvel's mutant world. Those names that make their way through the opening credits – Cyclops, Wolverine, Professor Xavier – entered the cultural vernacular.
In April 2024, X Men director, producer and artist Larry Houston shared with the Calgary Expo convention audience that Marvel Comics asked to change the lineup of the X-Men team. It was not a substantial change, but three decades later, time has proved crucial. Swapping two characters before may have shaped the X-Men media as we know it. What was the original team of “X-Men: The Animated Series”?
