Colossus, also known as Piotr Rasputin, was released in 1975 alongside Storm and Nightcrawler in the writer Len Wein and artist Dave Cockrum's Giant-sized X-Men #1. Born to farmers in Soviet Russia, Piotr is intimately familiar with the double whammy of responsibility and loss. He believes that his older brother, Mikhail, died in a spaceship accident, and his mutant powers manifest as he saves his sister Illyana (also a mutant, played by Anya Taylor-Joy in the New Mutants movie). At will, his body transforms into steel strong enough to withstand almost any weapon or weather condition.

Instead of seeking fame and heroism, Piotr is a wary X-Men recruit. Although Colossus reunites with the X-Men, he later joins the Excalibur team co-founded by Rachel Summers.

Colossus' tenure with the X-Men has no shortage of material for mine. Mind control, death, resurrection, internal conflict, and grief fit together perfectly X-Men: The Animated Seriesstories without fear. An American superhero group including two Russian members in the lingering shadows of the Cold War wouldn't be lost on anyone either. Claremont's star character, Byrne and Terry Austin's Days of Future Past arc (and performed by Elliot Page in the film of the same name), Kitty is often the youngest member of the X-Men. Storm and Wolverine see her as a little sister or daughter figure. In the context of X-Men: The Animated Series, that dynamic is redundant with Jubilee (Alyson Court) on deck as the newest teenager initiated and the audience substitute. Kitty needs enough difference to justify her presence. Aging the character and exploring her identity as an American Ashkenazi Jew whose grandfather survived a WWII concentration camp would be a phenomenal angle. She necessarily diversifies the team and has natural ties to Magneto's (David Hemblen) perspective as a Holocaust survivor.

together, Piotr and Kitty share a love story to root for. like jubilee (Holly Chou) and Roberto da Costa (Gui Augustini) in X-Men '97, contain all the requisite awkward sweetness of anxious teenagers harboring hopeful crushes and navigating new experiences. Gambit and Rogue are the heart of 'X-Men '97

Examining the other side, Gambit debuted in the summer of 1990, the same year X-Men: The Animated Series pre-production began. Although a well-received character from the jump thanks to the inventors Chris Claremont and Jim Lee, there is little doubt of the presence of Remy LeBeau X Men it propelled its popularity beyond comics. A witty rapscallion with kinetic powers and a fancy coat, audiences embraced Gambit (Chris Potter) as an impregnable member of the X-Men. His loving, endearing, and unconsummated relationship with Rogue became one of the series' trademarks, enough so that X-Men '97The dramatics of Gambit, Rogue, and Magneto depend (Matthew Waterson) love triangle.

At that time, the arrival of Rogue in 1981 Avengers Annual #10 made her a newer character than Kitty Pryde's contemporary Storm and Colossus. Another Claremont creation, this time with the artist Michael Goldentheir emotional struggles on the ground X-Men: The Animated Series i X-Men '97. Their isolation taps into a uniquely human need for intimate connection. '97 brings Rogue's arc full circle through her half-rekindled romance with Magneto. By understanding what satisfies her as a person, she discovers solid ground for the first time. Choosing Gambit only to lose him sends Rogue into a devastated fury, and it's a heartbreaking desolation that can only be achieved thanks to the previous five seasons.

Rogue and Gambit's romance may not have the charm of young teenage love, but their adventure offers plenty of family power for adults watching. X-Men '97 with a mature perspective. Aside from Jubilee and Sunspot, the X-Men are in their 20s and 30s. They carry uniquely personal but still universal fears, dreams and insecurities. Rogue and Gambit work through their confusion and come out stronger on the other side. Cyclops and Jean Gray might be the royal couple of the series, but so what X-Men: The Animated Series without Rogue and Gambit? The children discovered each other through Rogue's fierce courage and endearing vulnerability. Others found their way by seeing Gambit's devoted heart trip up his checkered past. Together, they are electric.

On a macro scale, it would Anna Paquin's Rogue have played a pivotal role in the 2000s X Men if Lenore Zann hadn't made the character culturally significant? Writer of the series Eric Lewaldtold Inverse in 2022, “I also know that this show helped inform the first one X Men movies, which of course sets the stage for the MCU and all the amazing movies they're making.” Piotr Rasputin and Kitty Pryde are dynamic characters who share a charming romance. But without Rogue and Gambit, it's fair to assume it's not on screen X Men the world would be the same. We definitely “remember the name” – both of their names.
