The big picture

  • Season 7 of
    The Rookie
will have more villains and personal character arcs to explore. (
  • Season 7 will feature more undercover stories with Nyla and Lucy.
  • Expect more from the Harper-López duo and intense episodes that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The Rookie Season 6 ended on a high note, and Season 7 will have several storylines to explore. ABC renewed the show for a new season while the sixth was airing, guaranteeing more of Mid Wilshire in the 2024/2025 television season. The caveat is that fans have to wait until mid-season to see new episodes. Although the show won't air until 2025, production isn't slowing down. Showrunner Alex Hawley revealed to TV Line that production on Season 7 will begin early next month, saying, “At the beginning of June, we're right back at it.”

This is a great update because it confirms what Eric Winter he told Hello Magazine about season 7. “There would be too many gaps and the fans don't love that. So they're really trying to get us in a lineup where we can give eight episodes in a row without interruption, and so I appreciate that for that reason,” he said while talking about the back-to-back season. With production starting so soon, the show will have enough episodes completed to guarantee an uninterrupted season.

Season 7 of 'The Rookie' will be bigger than the previous seasons

Just because of the sheer number of major villains Season 7 has to deal with, it's going to have a lot of reduction. Hawley spoke with TV Insider about what fans can expect from the upcoming season in terms of villains and characters' personal arcs. He teased Jason as the biggest threat to the show because he wants to hurt Bailey, saying, “I think Jason is probably the most immediate problem. I can't necessarily comment on Oscar and Monica yet, but I think obviously Jason is the one that has the most specific intent, the most harmful to anyone in our program right now.”

The season will have more undercover storylines because Nyla is an experienced undercover detective who has been very underused this season. Lucy has also grown into a great undercover asset. Hawley talked about exploring these characters, saying, “Mekia does such a great job with it, and obviously it's something that's undercover in our show, Lucy's interested in it. So yeah, we're definitely going down that road in season 7”.

But what about the Harper-López duo that fans have come to love? Hawley further scoffed at this, saying:

“I can do anything with them. That's the joy of this cast, and most of all, they have so much depth, they can play funny, they can play emotionally, they can play, they can kick a door. All of those things are a possibility, but nevertheless they are very different people and they are very different characters.”

Hawley knows they “have some big shoes to fill after season six” and teases “an episode every week that really keeps you on the edge of your seat.”

Starting over isn't easy, especially for John Nolan who, after a life-changing incident, pursues his dream of joining the LAPD. As its biggest rookie, it has met with skepticism from those who see it as a midlife crisis.
