Threads has passed the 175 million user mark, a year after the platform was launched as an alternative to X (formerly known as Twitter). The Meta-owned microblogging service was launched on July 6 last year. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also revealed that India has become one of its most active markets. In a blog post published on Thursday, the social media giant shared that Indian users regularly use Threads to share their thoughts and opinions on a wide range of topics.

While Meta announced Thursday that Threads has onboarded more than 175 million monthly active users, it did not share the number of users in India or specific user statistics for other countries. The service now has 50 million topic tags, according to Facebook's parent company.

Indians among the most active users on Threads

According to details shared by Meta on Thursday, Indian users were among the most active on Threads. The platform has also described popular topics of participation and discussions on the microblogging platform.

Topics on movies, TV, OTT content and sports got the highest engagement from Indian users on Threads. In addition, conversations around celebrities also caught the attention of users in the country.

Meta also notes that on Threads, users in India are more likely to tag another account in their posts and add video clips to content, compared to users in other countries.

Meta added a clear mention of the cricket craze in India, which hits social media apps like Threads, against the backdrop of domestic and international matches like IPL, T20 Cricket World Cup , IPL and the Women's Premier League 2024. .

Content creators in India are also exploring Threads, Meta claimed.

“We've seen creators use Threads to post about a different area of interest or niche,” their post said, noting that fashion, memes and the journal entry format are becoming popular in Threads from India.

Threads is celebrating a one year anniversary

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg launched Threads on July 6 last year, and the platform was designed as a microblogging service, like its competitor X, now owned by Elon Musk.

Zuckerberg had tied Threads to Instagram at launch, given that the latter is estimated to have around 2.4 billion active users. This helped the app gain a large number of users when it was launched.

According to data from Google Play as of Thursday, Threads has been downloaded more than 100 million times on Android devices. The app has a rating of 4.2 stars (out of five stars), based on over 500,000 reviews.

The company has also released new features on a regular basis. In May, the platform was updated with multi-column feeds in the desktop version of Threads.

Threads is also testing an auto-archive post feature to help users hide past posts.
