Chatting with Tommy Hilfiger after the opening of his newest store isn't all that different from an after-party catch-up with friends, except it's 8 a.m., we're in Mykonos, and we're sitting on of some ruins you can see through the transparent panels on the shop floor.
On June 6, the all-American designer christened the 150 square meter retail space with a lively party that spilled into the square as guests such as Lukas Gage, Sofia Hublitz, Romee Strijd and Emily in ParisLucien Laviscount admired the elegant local willow ceilings and limestone marble. “I want them to feel like we really understand the customer's needs,” Hilfiger tells NYLON the next morning. Whether it's a breezy linen shirt and one-piece for the beach or a crochet dress from the Sofia Richie Collection for chair dancing at Lío or Moni (located conveniently next to it), Hilfiger says he wants you to be able to grab exactly what you want to wear at that moment.
That's also why the store's selection includes menswear, shoes, accessories, underwear and swimwear, as well as what Hilfiger calls “the most stylish item in the entire store”: a white Bianca Jagger-like suite with a waist tall and wide-legged he suggests pairing it with a T-shirt, or nothing underneath. “Everything we have in the store goes from day to night,” says Hilfiger. “And I would say that in some of the clubs, the look could be a bit more risque, where the girls could wear bikinis on the dance floor. But then there are other clubs that are perhaps more conservative, [where] you could wear something more casual.”
Whatever exit aesthetic you're buying, don't forget to look down, as several attendees at the opening event admired the see-through sections that revealed the ruins (one even thought the whole The floor should have been transparent), Hilfiger says it's a detail that shouldn't be missed. “If you just think about the fact that there was a community built underneath us, that's amazing to me,” he says. (Archaeological experts are investigating the debris.) But above ground, it's about living and dressing for the moment.
