Former President Donald Trump issued a new statement early Sunday after a bullet grazed his ear as he a gunman opened fire at a rally in Pennsylvania saying he “looks forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week from Wisconsin.”

“At this time, it is more important than ever that we stand together and show our true character as Americans by standing strong and determined and not allowing evil to win,” Trump posted on social media.

A gunman opened fire Saturday as Trump spoke at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, touching the former president's ear. One bystander was killed and two others were seriously injured, the FBI said Saturday afternoon.

The The FBI identified the suspect in the shooting as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of nearby Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The Secret Service said they had “neutralized” the shooter and confirmed he was dead. The FBI is leading the investigation into the shooting, and no motive has yet been identified.

The White House said on Saturday afternoon President Biden had spoken with Trump by phone Mr Biden will be briefed on the situation on Sunday morning. In a televised statement late Saturday, Mr. Biden called for calm and called the assassination attempt on his political rival “sick.”

The Republican National Convention begins Monday in Milwaukee, and Trump will announce his running mate this week.
