UFC Legend Believes Khamzat Chimaev Could Face Takedown Challenges Against Dricus Du Plessis

According to a prominent mixed martial arts figure, Khamzat Chimaev might encounter significant difficulty in his efforts to out-grapple Dricus Du Plessis.

The highly anticipated clash between the two fighters is scheduled for UFC 319 on August 16th, taking place at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Given Chimaev`s history of delivering spectacular performances, many observers anticipate a victory for `Borz`. For example, fellow fighter Darren Till has predicted Chimaev will defeat Du Plessis within the first two rounds.

However, another respected expert holds a different view, believing the South African champion is well-equipped to handle himself on the ground.

Chael Sonnen Discusses Khamzat Chimaev`s Potential Takedown Struggles Against Dricus Du Plessis

While acknowledging Khamzat Chimaev as the favorite heading into the showdown with Dricus Du Plessis, veteran commentator and former fighter Chael Sonnen is not completely dismissing the reigning UFC champion`s chances.

The outspoken analyst is convinced that `Stillknocks` possesses sufficient talent in the grappling realm to pose a substantial threat to the challenger.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, `The American Gangster` offered his perspective:

“How is he going to beat him? I`m not entirely convinced Chimaev can simply take him down whenever he wants. Nor am I fully confident he can control him on the ground once there.

We`ll get a good indication in the very first round. If Dricus is taken down early, the situation could deteriorate rapidly for him. But if he successfully defends takedowns throughout the initial five minutes, maintaining that defense will become easier later in the fight.

It`s undoubtedly an exciting matchup, and while I expect Chimaev to be the favorite, which he is, Du Plessis is a real threat.”

Sean Strickland Offers His Prediction for Du Plessis vs. Chimaev

Having shared the octagon with Dricus Du Plessis on two separate occasions, Sean Strickland possesses unique insight into the South African champion`s abilities.

This experience positions Strickland well to offer his opinion on whether his former opponent has what it takes to overcome one of the most intimidating fighters in the sport.

Unsurprisingly, the straightforward American was forthcoming with his analysis of the matchup.

In a recent interview, Strickland shared his thoughts on the Du Plessis vs. Chimaev fight.
