In the ruins of eastern Ukraine, peasants do not leave their animals
15:40, Matt Mathers
When the sounds of artillery explosions are heard in the distance, Senya, a large white rabbit, wriggles in the arms of his master Herbert Villaragi , reports from Yampol, Donetsk region of Ukraine.
"He's afraid," explained the peasant girl Yevgenia, stroking the bunny.
Here in Yampol, a rocky town in eastern Ukraine, buildings recaptured by Ukrainian forces in late September after months of Russian occupation have collapsed and most people have left. But it is not Evgenia and Ivan who say they cannot leave their rabbits, ducks, chickens and pigeons.
That was not easy.
“We have always had rabbits. But when [rockets] started falling on the maple, I saw 15 of them on the ground in the morning with blood on their noses. It’s stress,” Ivan said.
The Ukrainian authorities brought leaflets calling for the remaining residents to evacuate. Ivan and Zhenya don't go anywhere.
“This is my escape. I have lived here all my life,” Ivan said.
Evgenia claims that she has been involved in poultry farming since childhood and lives on a farm with her mother.
“That love grew with us as we got older. This is what we do and we cannot live without our chickens and rabbits. So we try to do as much as possible physically.”
Near the village is a blown-up barn filled with animal bones, a monument to the dark fate of animals in the war zone. Private owners have collected a range of wild and exotic animals here. Tour buses took children to a private zoo to see ostriches, bears, wolves, kangaroos and birds, residents said.
According to local residents, the animals died, escaped or were killed during the Russian occupation.
Before the war, "there were picnics from all over Ukraine … big buses with children came." Pavel, a farmer who lives in the area, said it was a cultural center.
But now… he's gone.

An Italian theater has canceled Friday's performance of a famous Russian dancer with three tattoos of President Vladimir Putin on his chest and shoulder following an online protest against the artist's planned show.
Sergei Polunin's performance at Milan's Teatro degli Arcimboldi on January 28-29 was canceled "due to an active campaign (against him) on the Internet and social networks," according to the theatre's website.
Mr. Polunin was originally slated to star in the dance drama Rasputin, originally scheduled for 2019 but delayed several times due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The theater said the cancellation was a "political and moral responsibility" given the "tense and brooding atmosphere". The spokesperson said the theater had been subjected to an email campaign and a number of negative comments had been made online.
Arcimboldi, who said he made the decision after consulting with the artist's company, strongly opposes the war in Ukraine and stressed that he organized the exhibition for the Russian opposition group Pussy Riot and Ukrainian artists.
Mr Polunin, one of the biggest names in dance and a former soloist with the London Royal Ballet, was born in Ukraine but became a Russian citizen in 2018. There was no immediate response to a request for comment via the website.

Vildana Mutevelia huddles in her apartment with two small children and elderly cousins. They had no heating, no electricity, no running water. When artillery shells ripped off the roof of their house and nearly killed them.
To survive, he improvised.
Muteveli made a light bulb out of used machine oil, water and fuses. Cook over a fire lit by books, furniture, shoes, or clothing. He found that a plastic spoon works well as a makeshift flashlight if it goes out when turned on. Plastic sheeting covered the broken windows, a thin shield against the bitter cold. His news of the world comes from a neighbor who has a car-battery radio.
“The lights went out immediately,” Muteveliya, 70, said through an interpreter. “And everything in our fridge melted. In fact, it was our destiny. It's all."
For Muteveli, it is the memory of the thousands of civilian casualties when the Bosnian Serbs laid siege to Sarajevo 30 years ago. But all this is happening again in Ukraine. Earlier this summer, the Russian military shelled Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
