When Can You Watch ‘A Murder at the End of the World’ on TV and Streaming?

Movies

After months of waiting, the much-awaited A Murder at the End of the World (originally titled Retreat) is finally arriving. Created by the remarkable duo Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, A Murder at the End of the World is what one would call a classic murder plot with contemporary packaging. The story centers on Darby, an amateur sleuth who is invited to a remote and lavish retreat by a reclusive billionaire, Andy Ronson. Unaware of what awaits at the end of the dazzling offer, Darby heads to the isolated place along with eight other guests who were also invited by Andy. But when one of the guests is found dead, a luxurious vacation turns dark and disturbing, and Darby sets out to solve the case before anyone else dies. A Murder at the End of the World is led by Golden Globe-winning Emma Corin of The Crown fame, who stars as Darby, and BAFTA-winning Clive Owen as Andy. Other cast members include Jermaine Fowler, Harris Dickinson, Alice Braga, and Joan Chen. Marling, an actor and screenwriter best known for starring in the series Babylon and co-creating the sci-fi mystery series The OA (with Batmanglij) also stars and executive produces along with Batmanglij, Andrea Sperling, Melanie Marnich, and Nicki Paluga.

Although it’s a familiar trope that dominated 20th-century classic literature (especially Agatha Christie stories) A Murder at the End of the World promises a fresh twist on mystery solving with an interesting detective, a very modern setting, and a new take on crimes and criminals. Furthermore, this series also appears to be a big shift from Marling and Batmanglij’s earlier collaboration, The OA. The all-new murder mystery series has already created a stir with its initial reviews and reactions and has garnered an 83% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating. Reviewing the limited series, Collider’s Carly Lane has said:

Emma Corrin delivers a captivating performance as the lead, portraying the complexities of their character’s past and present selves. The show is best savored slowly, allowing the audience to fully absorb the intriguing plot and unsettling surprises. A Murder at the End of the World doesn’t solely rely on the device of forcing its characters into close quarters to make its story more eerie — the show’s very aesthetic, especially in the present-day timeline, is austere and biting.

And now, for all those waiting eagerly for this all-new FX on Hulu series, here are all the details on how, when, and where you can watch A Murder at the End of the World.

Watch the Trailer for ‘A Murder at the End of the World’

FX released several teasers and trailers for A Murder at the End of the World, with the most recent one released on November 7, 2023. The videos jump to the plot straight away, focusing on Corrin’s Darby Hart, who is referenced as the “Gen Z Sherlock Holmes”, which is a big change from their previous roles like Diana in The Crown Season 4 and Lady Chatterley in Lady Chatterley’s Lover. The latest trailer opens with Darby trying to decode a case when she receives an invitation to a retreat. The audience joins her at a lavish mansion in a remote, barren, but breathtaking snow-clad landscape. The clip quickly dives into the first death and everyone scampers about in fear, wondering what (or who) will be next. Meanwhile, Darby uses her sharp sleuthing skills to prove that it’s a murder. Clive Owen’s billionaire host, Andy, seems convinced that what she sees as a murder is not one. Despite the edgy, state-of-the-art setting, it’s hard to ignore the parallels to classics like And Then There Were None or the recent Glass Onion. However, the austere aesthetics and eerie atmosphere of A Murder at the End of the World seem quite intriguing.

This crime drama series is created by Academy-winning screenwriter-filmmaker Dustin Lance Black, best known for writing the multi-award-winning film Milk and creating the ABC series When We Rise. Based on the eponymous nonfiction book by Jon Krakauer, Under the Banner of Heaven is set in 1984, in the suburbs of Salt Lake City, Utah, and follows the brutal murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty and her baby daughter. When Detective Jeb Pyre of the Utah police department begins to investigate, he discovers disturbing information involving the Latter-Day Saints Church that shakes his belief in his own religion and makes him question his faith. The seven-episode miniseries features an ensemble cast with Academy-nominated Andrew Garfield as Jeb, along with Gil Birmingham, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sam Worthington, Wyatt Russell, and Rory Culkin in various roles. Besides a murder mystery investigation, Under the Banner of Heaven also explores the violent consequences of unyielding faith, which, though it is a familiar trope, manages to get the audience’s attention through its gripping narrative of a true crime. Despite some controversies surrounding the show’s theme, the true crime drama series was well-received among critics and fans alike, earning an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Both Garfield and Edgar-Jones earned Golden Globe nominations for their performances with Garfield also getting nominated for an Emmy.

Created by Rob Thomas of Party Down and iZombie fame, Veronica Mars has a history of 15 years. The show was first released in 2004 and ran for three seasons on UPN/The CW, following a cancellation, a film revival in 2014, and finally, a fourth and final season, released in 2019. This teen mystery drama series also became a major landmark in Kristen Bell’s career featuring her as the titular sleuth. Set in the fictional Californian town of Neptune, the series follows Veronica Mars, a smart, daring, and tough private investigator, who solves the town’s most complex mysteries along with her sheriff-turned-PI father, Keith Mars. As was the trend of crime thrillers of the 2000s, each episode in this series features a stand-alone case with an underlying mystery arc that runs throughout the season. During its run, Veronica Mars and her portrayal by Bell became a fan-favorite, with high ratings and viewership, including several awards for her performance. While the show’s format might feel like a procedural thriller, it has plenty of murder-solving to keep the genre buff satisfied, not to mention great sardonic humor and witty characters.
