7 Most Anticipated Sequels Coming in 2024

From Dune: second part a Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, 2024 has begun its streak of notable sequels on the big screen. Last year could have been marked by blockbuster follow-ups, such as this one Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One i Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3but this year will be especially dedicated to fans of the classics.

Many of the titles that will get a sequel in 2024 have been out for decades, and most moviegoers have probably given up hope for more content. However, it seems that the legacy of these films will continue as a new generation experiences their follow-ups in theaters.

For example, Gladiator 2 it will be 24 years after its first installment became an award-winning success. Beetle juice it will also have a sequel 36 years after the original film. If these titles still don't spark some interest in what's to come, the rest of this list will probably do the trick.

Inside out 2

Pixar's 2015 Oscar-winning comedy Inside out is about to get a sequel that will follow the last scene of the movie. After the Joy (Amy Poehler) taps the “puberty” button, Riley (Kensington Tallman) dives into the roller coaster of emotions that arrive at high school. Unlocking a new chapter in his life, the teenager must also struggle with new emotions such as anxiety (Maya Hawke). According to Collider's own Britta DeVore, who saw the first 35 minutes of the sequel, the film will address Riley's challenges with growth spurts and her social life, which is sure to bring chaos to the control room .

Maxine

After X watched a group of adult filmmakers kill one by one, You West released a prequel to the film and is now gearing up for a direct sequel. In maxxine, which takes place after the horrific events of X, the titular character continues to act and is on the verge of achieving fame. However, her sinister past comes back to haunt her when a serial killer comes to town and begins stalking Hollywood actors and leaving a trail of blood in the process. The sequel will close the trilogy, and second Mia Goththe stakes are higher than ever for his character as he quickly realizes just how cutthroat the film industry can be.

Twisters

Jan de Bont1996 disaster drama Twister will have a following more than 20 years after its release. Twisters will incorporate elements of the original into its plot, but there will be no returning characters. Instead, the project will follow a new trio of storm chasers who end up in central Oklahoma, where multiple storm systems are converging, putting their lives in danger. Full of action and tornadoes, the film will see its main characters suffer many trials in their search for the origins of these natural disasters.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Yes Twister has a sequel decades later, what about the other classics? Believe it or not, more movies are getting the follow-up treatment years after their release. One of them is Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuicewhich will mark the return of Michael Keaton i Winona Ryder to his emblematic roles. The upcoming project will follow three generations of Deetzs as they return to Winter River for a funeral. When Lydia's rebellious daughter (played by Jenna Ortega) explores the attic of his haunted house and the portal to the afterlife accidentally opens again, it's only a matter of time before someone frees Beetlejuice.

Joker: Folie à Deux

After winning an Oscar for playing Arthur Fleck joker, Joaquin Phoenix will reprise the role of the villain in the upcoming sequel. This time, you will share the screen with Lady Gaga, who will play his love interest Harley Quinn. While much of the plot has not been revealed, the film will follow these two lunatics as they find themselves in Arkham Asylum and begin a deranged romance that eventually leads them to break out of their cells and wreak havoc on Gotham City. It is worth saying that, unlike its predecessor, Joker: Folie à Deux it will be a musical.

Gladiator 2

Ridley Scottthe blockbuster hit, gladiator, easily makes the list of on-screen projects that left their mark on film history. Not only did it feature innovative use of special effects, but it also set a precedent for production design in historical films. 24 years later, Scott will revisit the Roman Empire now through the lens of Lucius (Paul Mescal), the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) who was introduced in the OG movie. The character has grown up and will likely find himself at a crossroads, pondering whether to be a ruler or a gladiator-like Maximus (his childhood hero played by Russell Crowe). If the director already did a phenomenal job of bringing an arena to life on the big screen back in the day, he'll likely bring even more flair to this follow-up.

The Karate Kid

Cobra Kai might have brought back the thrill of martial arts, but Danny LaRusso's (Ralph Macchio) will not end in Season 6, the show's final season. He'll stick around for another Karate Kid sequel, this time on the side Jackie Chanwho played karate instructor Mr. Han in the 2010 reboot. Cobra Kai fans were clamoring for Chan to appear as a guest on the series, but the collaboration between him and Macchio will only take shape in this upcoming project. While the release date has been revealed, there is no word on the sequel's official title or plot details. There is an exciting casting update though, as the actors released a video announcing that there would be a global search for the franchise's next star. According to a social media post on April 4, the film is currently in production and it was revealed that the identity of the next Karate Kid was Ben Wang (which was part of the recent bad girls musical film).
