Instagram Testing Support for Cross-Posting Images to Threads: Report

Threads — Meta's microblogging service that competes with X (formerly Twitter) — could add support for cross-posting Instagram content. According to a report, some accounts have been updated with an option to post an image to Instagram while simultaneously uploading it to Threads – the firm previously tested similar functionality for the Facebook app. The feature is currently being tested with some users, and only image cross-posting is supported at this time. The company could eventually roll out the feature to all users.

TechCrunch reports that some Instagram users now have the option to cross-post to Threads as a toggle. Users will have to turn it on to use the feature, and it's currently unclear if the toggle will remain on for future releases. As the cross-posting option is currently being tested, not all users will be able to access the feature; has not yet been activated on Gadgets 360 staff member accounts.

In its current form, Instagram users who have access to the cross-post feature can only share images in Threads. According to the report, sharing a reel is currently not supported. This means you'll need to manually upload your vertical videos to Threads, even if cross-posting is enabled for your Instagram account.

According to the post, cross-posting an Instagram image will automatically use the caption as the text for posting to Threads. However, users might remember that Threads does not support hashtags with the hash symbol (#) like Instagram, so Threads will reportedly remove hashtags in the cross-post text.

Instagram users can currently cross-post content and stories to their Facebook accounts by activating a switch on their account. When simultaneous image sharing is enabled in Threads, it will likely provide the same functionality as Facebook's cross-posting tool, while still being an opt-in feature. according to the report.
