Police were searching for a man known for prior domestic violence offenses Wednesday after the alleged assailant fled the scene in a gray 2006 Ford Focus.

At around 7.50am on Thursday, a 45-year-old man walked into Dee Why Police Station where he was arrested and taken to Manly Police Station. Charges have yet to be filed.

A witness to the alleged stabbing said he heard a scream as he was leaving the parking lot and turned to see a man “on top” of the woman.

“From a distance, I didn't know what he was trying to do to him. It looked like he was trying to attack her or rob her,” the witness said.

“A guy closer stopped [the attack]and then [the alleged perpetrator] I just left.”
