New Honor Flip Phone With Edged Clamshell Design Reportedly in Development, Hints Patent Filing

Technology

According to a report, a new Honor phone with a shell design consisting of sharp and geometric edges could be in development. Despite having a presence in the foldable smartphone market with its Honor Magic V series sold in various regions, the Chinese smartphone maker does not have a shell offering. However, it has been speculated that a clamshell smartphone could be in development and that it may have an angular design, which would set it apart in the market.

A new Honor Flip phone in development

According to a report by Gizmochina, a patent was spotted on China's National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) website filed by Honor in 2022 for a foldable phone. The patent was approved this month. While no specific details about the smartphone were revealed, the patent images showed a shell design with sharp edges instead of the rounded corners found on most flip phones on the market.

The front of the clamshell phone is said to have a pill-shaped cutout in the upper left corner and is speculated to house the camera unit along with the display on the cover.

In an interview with CNBC at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in February, Honor CEO George Zhao confirmed that the company was developing a flip-style smartphone and that it would likely launch by the end of year. However, the approval of the patent filing in May suggests that this may not be the case.

Upcoming Honor Magic V Flip

This is not the first time that rumors about a foldable phone from Honor have surfaced. A few days ago, well-known tipster Digital Chat Station published an alleged rendering of an Honor mobile phone with a circular camera unit. This smartphone is speculated to be the Honor V Flip that the company will launch in June.

The smartphone is also reported to feature a massive bezel-less display and a 4,500mAh dual-cell battery. When launched, it could compete against the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra and the Samsung Galaxy Flip 6, which are expected to launch soon.
