‘The Muppet Movie’ Returns to Theaters for Its 45th Anniversary

The Muppets Movie returns to theaters for its 45th anniversary; can you imagine Fathom Events is bringing the classic family picture back to the big screen for two days only, June 2nd and 3rd. The screenings will be part of Fathom's Big Screen Classics series.

The film, which was originally released in 1979, was the Muppets' first big screen outing. Fathom's screenings will be preceded by an exclusive introduction by the film critic and historian Leonard Maltindiscussing the film, as well as the life and legacy of the Muppet mastermind Jim Henson. It will be shown in select cities and theaters nationwide on Sunday, June 2, for a matinee screening at 1:00 p.m. and an evening screening at 7:00 p.m., and on Monday, June 3, for screenings only at at 19.00 Tickets and times are available at FathomEvents.com.

What happens in “The Muppet Movie”?

Directed by a television veteran James Frawley, The Muppets Movie tells the origin story of the puppet title, as Kermit the Frog (Henson) leaves his swampy home on a cross-country journey in search of fame and fortune. Along the way, he meets and befriends Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and all your felt favorites, played by an intrepid team of puppeteers that included Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Dave Goelzi Richard Hunt. However, he also encounters the sinister Doc Hopper (Charles Durning), who wants him as a spokesperson for his chain of frog-legged restaurants, or. The journey to fame and fortune is long, but includes a series of inspired musical numbers (incl Paul WilliamsOscar-nominated “Rainbow Connection”) and a bevy of celebrity cameos, incl Orson Welles, Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Elliot Gouldi Mel Brooks. In the end, of course, it's time to play the music and turn on the lights, as the Muppets become as famous in the movie as they are in real life.

The Muppets Movie was a huge success, earning over $65 million on an $8 million budget. Its success spawned a number of other Muppet films, the most recent being 2014's The Muppets Most Wanted. The future of the Muppets is unclear, however. Despite positive critical notices, the Disney+ series The Muppets Mayhemstarring fan favorites Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, was canceled after one season.
