Waco Rep. Pete Sessions to run for Speaker of the House

Politics

Congressman Pete Sessions, R-Waco, announced his candidacy for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday, throwing his hat into a ring that has seen much infighting between Republicans since the former speaker, California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, was ousted from the position earlier this month.

In a press release, Sessions said he believes he can forge a positive path as a conservative leader and said he aims to unite the conference. Sessions previously voted against removing McCarthy as speaker and has backed Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan in the previous three rounds of voting for speaker.

Jordan was nominated by House Republicans for the speakership, but was dropped Friday after failing to gain enough votes during the third round of voting.
